A 5 year old boy develops a rash suggestive of chickenpox. He simultaneously develops a bad cough and vomiting. His mother gives him some of her over-the-counter remedy that contains aspirin. About 5 days after the onset the chickenpox the rash is improving but the vomiting persists and appears to be getting worse. The child is noted to be getting drowsy. He shows personality changes, with aggressive behavior and does not recognize his parents. Investigation reveals an elevation of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, though his bilirubin is normal. A likely diagnosis is :

a) Reye syndrome
b) urinary tract infection
