An elderly woman complains of spontaneous attacks of a sensation of a 'spinning room' lasting about an hour, on a single occasion accompanied by a fall. During these attacks her friend noted that the patient becomes pale and sweats profusely. All symptoms are aggravated by motion and resolve spontaneously. Examination is unremarkable. Appropriate management would include
