A 60-year-old man, who had been treated with regular hemodialysis for chronic renal failure for 20 years was admitted because of left hip joint pain. A radiograph of the left femur showed a pathological fracture of the femoral neck, for which total joint replacement was performed. At operation large subchondral bone cysts were found in the femoral head. Immunohistochemical examination of the lesions in the femoral head showed positive staining for anti-human 2-microglobulin antibody. This finding is specific for
